TRICH

My work is autobiographical and focuses on mental health and the development of compulsive personality disorders. It begins with adolescence and progresses into young adult hood. This series represents my personal struggle with Trichotillomania, and is designed to bring awareness to the importance of mental health.

Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder characterized by the compulsive urge to pull out one’s hair. This often leads to hair loss and balding, distress, and social or functional impairment. Trich develops out of chronic stress and anxiety and often leads to depression.

This body of work is exhibited as an installation to portray the domesticity behind a compulsive personality disorder. It not only affects the individual, but also the related family members living within the home. Home is a safe zone where you can carry out an anxiety and frustrations without being seen by the outside would.

Focusing on three-dimensional figurative and psychological imagery, the work portrays my rationalizations and how they developed into habits to cope with anxiety and counteract the shame. The sculptures are mixed media, incorporating hair within each composition. These images represent the emotions, irrational thoughts and taboo processes associated with the disease.
