STILL SWIMMING

Still Swimming is a kinetic sculpture that depicts the importance and permanency of the soul conveyed through the fossilized remains of a skeleton. It was inspired by the concept of life, faith, and hope. The main sculpture is placed on a pedestal to represent the importance of the soul. As the wind blows, the ribs sway and symbolize the eternal spirit through sound and movement. Stills Swimming was created to honor the lives of loved ones lost and the faith that we will one day be reunited.

The UNF Seaside Sculpture Park was a successful collaboration between UNF’s Division of Student Affairs and the College of Arts and Sciences, the Lazzara Family Foundation and MountainStar, with assistance from the city of Jacksonville Beach and the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville.

MountainStar Capital and the Lazzara Family Foundation provided a $50,000 donation to UNF to support the sculpture program. Mountain Star also provided the land for the development of the sculpture park.

According to MountainStar Capital CEO Christopher Lazzara, the project had three concrete goals: beautifying Jacksonville Beach through public art, bringing awareness to UNF’s art department, and honoring the work of the university’s sculpture students. Emily Pinnell was one of five artists to be selected to build and display their sculptures.
